HDRI question

Hi

When using VrayHDRI in a domelight - should this generate shadows or do I need another direct light source? If I do not need another light source to generate shadows - can someone point me in the right direction of using this lighting setup correctly?

Any help would be gratefully recieved!

vray dome light always generates shadows from hdri.

its odd, when i tried to use your hdr to place mine in there it gave me an error. There could be something funky with your setup?
anyway, here is a quick simple example that i just did to demonstrate.

It must be something wrong with the way I was using HDRI's that I have. I replaced your HDRI image with the ones that I have and I was back to having no shadows. I have subsequently relplaced it again with an Evermotion sample HDRI and it works fine.

I just need to find out how to use the HDRI's that I have now!! Is there something I should be doing with the files to set them up correctly?

did you build the hdri your self? if you did, the only thing that comes to mind is if your exposure of the hdr is not correct then the birghtest point which is the sun would be the same intencity as the rest of the hdri, making it not cast strong direct shadow.

No the HDRI comes from Dosch. I shall try to play with the exposure in PS. Could it be to do with the gamma settings??

for HDR images to cast strong shadows they need to have sufficient dynamic range (mistyped that as dynamic rage!). Its a long time since I used them, but I dont remember the dosch ones as being very good.. try the free sample from http://www.hdri-locations.com/ and see how you get on.

Cheers Niall - I was looking through that the other day. I tried using the method - but without really understanding why I would use it. I know I have a lot to learn with HDRI (in fact VRay as a whole!!), I guess I have to keep at it!
