Color mapping is a way to balance light/dark regions in your scene. If you turn up the dark multiplier, you can lighten up the dark regions without having to adjust lighting, and you don't need to recalculate the irradiance map.
Linear multiplies color values in a linear way, exponential does this 'exponential'. The last is more usefull to prevent overburnt regions.
Just render a scene with GI, save the map and set it to reuse this map. Then play with the dark/light settings (bot for linear and exponential).
