  • vel pass problem when rendering w/embedded exr channels.

I had a strange issue today with my vray velocity element. I'm using the .exr instead of .vrimg trick within the vray output. That way all my elements are embedded into the exr. Normally this works fine. I do this in production quite a bit. (although, i don't remember if i've done it with vel)

Using the proexr plugs in AE, I brought in my exr file and isolated the velocity element. There is only data in the red channel. Green and blue are black. WTF?

I render it out the regular way with a separate velocity element file and its fine.

I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. Has anyone else encountered this?

    Sounds like a parasitic issue...

      Hi smashley,

I also use the .exr extension in the save box and have used the velocity element but all seems to be ok. Never had that issue come up, just checked a recent rendered .exr and all the velocity channels look ok.

It seems to be specific to this scene. The velocity pass is completely lacking a blue channel and the color for non-moving objects is usually 50% in all channels, it's black. So non-moving objects are black rather than the normal yellow/green or gray color.

I'm able to fix it in the comp by screening it over a 50% gray solid and setting the blue channel to black. But it is very strange.

When I try to re-create it with a fresh scene, it's fine.
