  • Saving '*.vrimg' as '*.exr' ?

    Hi there,

I have a question regarding saving a '*.vrimg' file as an '*.exr' through the V-Ray frame buffer by just changing the file extension..

What (if any) Exr Compression Type does it use saving it this way as there is no 'Configuration' box..?

    Many thanks,

It uses tiled EXRs. These are not optimal for use in nuke. Converting them to zip1 scanline performs way better.
The reason it doesnt allow you to change that is that the exr output is supposed to give the same advantage as vrimg. Namely to save to arbitrary tiles (=buckets) without keeing the whole iamge in ram and hence allowing to save a LOT of ram with big images and lots of elements.

      Thanks,

So would it be better to save to OpenExr through the 'Common Parameters' dialog? Can you still use all the Vray Elements doing it this way?

      Many Thanks

        Hi,
I think it will be better that way, but in some cases ( e.g. huge resolutions with many RE ) -it would not.

You`ll be able to save VRay RE into single EXR only in Max 2010 with `Connection extension` update - it will allow you also to choose exact properties of each element ( e.g. bit depth, compression, etc.. ).

        So far,

We usually render via the VRayVFB for various reasons and postprocess the EXRs automatically. Cant tell for 2k10 and the extension tho as we're still on an earlier feature freeze.
