  • 1.09.03 series - speed?

    just curious,

is there a noteable speed increase in rendering with the new builds.

    regards,

With the same settings as before.. not really.
But with the 03 builds you can seriously speed up Glossy reflections/refractions and translucency with tweakes settings because they are now independent from the irradiance map.

please elaborate on which settings can be adjusted to speed up reflections/refractions.

The min/max settings and the threshold values for glossy interpolation are now controlled on a per material basis. And the interpolation has been made independent of the irradiance maps.

First of all this means that you can now work with glossy interpolation and saved irradiance maps at the same time (previously impossible). This is a huge timesaver, but not and increase in renderspeed.

Secondly, the fact that you can control the settings on a per material basis, instead of the interpolation being controlled by the irradiance map settings means that you can optimize the settings locally.

An example of this would be a scene with a waxy blob in a detailed (greebled) environment (lame example I know..). Here you would most likely need a high preset for the irradiance map to get enough GI detail in the corners, cracks etc. But this would also make the interpolated SSS of the waxy blob be very slow, and the scene would take a while to render. With the new build you can set the waxy blob to use a much lower interpolation setting and get the same result in a fraction of the time.
