  • Vray Proxy and very large objects ?

A friend of me is currently searching for a solution to render out huge amounts of data
(Mind blowing neuro science stuff )
Would vray be capable to render.. for example an amount of one billion polys in a single
object, that was exported to a proxy ?
I know that vray can handle way more when it comes to trees and stuff like that, but what
about a single very large object ?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I kind of doubt vray could render 1 billion unique polys. Would max even be able to open it?

I would think the only limitation would be hardware.

EDIT: Thinking about it more, you would need to consider the intended output first as there are several tricks that could be used for stills or animations of such a large amount of data.

I could be wrong but it should be able to render it. Proxy is a dynamic object which means when it runs out of ram it should load and unload to get the job done. It might take long time to render it, but it should work. But 1 billion poly is a lot. I think he will have harder time porting it to proxy in the first place.

Thats kind of what I was getting at, though poorly worded. I can't conceive of max even being able to open an object with over 1 billion unique polys. But then again who's to say somebody hasn't already done it. Just seems crazy big to me.

max wont open such object. But there is a ply2vrmesh converter that comes with vray which can read large object data and write it to .vrmesh I have used it a number of times to bring in zbrush meshes as proxies to compare the displacements with displaced models. Its 64 bit too so, potentially if you have enough ram it will do the job. Question is, how much ram do you need to convert a billion poly.
I know on one project we worked on render man handled 6 billion polys. No raytracing though and object was built in sections and stitched together like a jigsaw puzzle.
