  • fast SSS effect

    Hi

i'm trying to lit a scene with some lamps and have tried many options regarding the canvas material that hides the light bulb. From the never ending glossy refractions and real translucency to the fake backlight plugin wich gives a good effect but does not let the light go through the material. I'm I doing something wrong? How can I get such material with reasonable rendering time?

    thanks in advance

Fake it. Paint a map in photoshop, or use a gradient. Either way, put it into the self-illum of a standard material and use that for the lamp-shade. 9 times out of 10 the CPU-hit you take from SSS isn't worth it.

This SSS in VRay should get a serious speed boost and some more logical controls. FinalRender has very nice and fast SSS effects with very simple and easy controls, so why shouldn't be VRay better (the best ) in this?

I think someone here on the forum is already working on a skin shader (don´t remember who though). If he´s doing what I think then it should also be good for fast translucency effects.
Also, now that the irradiance map is decoupled from the glossy effects, you can get very nice sub surface scattering by using much faster interpolated refractions. You can set them to a relatively high subdivision level (I found -3, -1 sufficient) by still leaving the irradiance map settings relatively low (as to your needs).
