  • finalRender to vray ?s

    Hi all,

I'm currently an fR user, and am evaluating a switch to Vray. I have a few questions about the vray approach to doing some basic things (using vray free 1.09, max 5.1):

-The docs refer to a vray material, but i only see a vray map. Did I do something wrong on the install?

-Glossy refraction is SLOW, even with glossy subdivs at 0 on a simple tube refracting a flipped textured self-illuminated sphere (3:04 at 640x480, dual athlon MP). I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what settings I would need to post to get a useful diagnosis. (Adaptive image sampler with -3/3, multipass, random if that helps). Haven't touched the raycaster params yet.

-Is there a more efficient (i.e. built-in) way to get fresnel reflection/refraction falloff than a regular falloff map in the filter color of the vray map?

-Are there some basic intro tutorials you can recommend as regards understanding what settings have the biggest impact on speed/quality tradeoffs? Someone posted a huge list on the discreet board a while back, but it's scrolled off.

    TIA

The Free version is limited.... its Free

Instead you should try the Demo version, its the advanced one...

I forgot to say that its good to understand how the settings work, but with vray usualy the defaults are good enough... dont tweak to much in order to get good render times.

Well, I'd rather get at least a bit up to speed in spare moments using free, so that I can schedule my timebombed demo for when I have time to really push it and spend a few whole days with it.

Are you saying that free and demo are different as regards raytracing speed/settings? The feature comparison seemed to imply there wasn't much of a difference there.

          Hi,

The VRay Material is not in the Free version. VRay Free doesn't have its own manual, so the docs may be a bit misleading.

VRay advanced has superfast interpolated glossy reflections and refractions through the VRay material.

Fresnel is available in the VRay material.

Like Gonçalo says, you should try the demo version since that will give you a better picture of the full capabilities.

Also there are a lot of information and tutorials for Vray advanced, so you have full access to them with the Demo version.

The timebomb is not a problem, since there is always a new demo out around the time the old demo expires.

Because of the VRay material, the Advanced version is a lot faster than the free version, and you also have much more control over the individual settings, so you can tweak them to improve rendertimes. Also, things like being able to save the GI solution to disk makes a huge difference.

Alright, demo it is then... I like the sound of those superfast glossy reflections. I wasn't aware you could re-install the demo (why timebomb it, then?).

I'm sure I'll be back soon.

It expires on a preset date, not a certain number of days after install. I assume it's because Chaos tend to have frequent updates, and they want to make sure people are evaluating with the latest and greatest

Hi Jon, nice to see you here

I had the same problem you encounter. I also switched to the demo and the difference was huge! Just read the manual about GI and some basic stuff and you will be comfortable with vray in minutes!

well.....I don't know, seems to me having glossy subdivs default to 50 is ludicrously high. Most test renders i set it to 5-10, and for finals i haven't gone above 20

Yes you right the 50 subdivions are usualy good for interpolations, you can even get good results with only 3 subdivions...

If you use interpolations, 50 is a pretty good default. Without interpolation I usually start at 3-6.
