  • Interesting article about point-rendering technique

    http://features.cgsociety.org/story_...?story_id=5615

    My understanding is..
It is very similar with Vray's irradiance map.

    BUT
It is not a view dependent(they bake a whole scene)
Pixar generates point data through their scanline technique so ot tend to be fast

Would there be an advantage to adopt this techinqye in VRay?

It can certainly be useful, however setting this up may be quite complicated.

yes. isnt each point data stored in a separate file for each object? that would be quite a data set to manage. I know it takes them quite some time to prep each scene with the whole baking process.

As far as I know the main reason for using of point based color bleeding is that it's very stable solution and you know what to expect, compared to VRay's Irradiance and MR's Final Gather. It's not flickering at all, and in the end you save a lot of time ... because you won't render beauty passes 4-5 times to get relatively flicker free results(specially in Mentalray).
