  • Dome light - HDRI resolution

    Hi all,
just wondering why is the dome light resolution when placing HDRI limited to 2048px?
does it affect the way HDRI is rendered in the background?
    thanks

    best regards

It only affects the samples generated for direct illumination; the HDRI map should still appear with its original resolution when viewed directly.

right...lets say i have a HDRI map 12000px wide with lots of light and dark places, quite contrasting....is 2048px resolution enough for precise GI cals in this case? does it mean the dome light only averages 6x6 pixels area? (12000/2048...approx 6px square)

It should be enough; keep in mind that you can always assign a higher value through MaxScript if necessary.

Vlado is there a way to show us a little example of that command.. ? I'm lost with maxscript and we use very large HDRI-s, will be good to pump the resolution more than 2048..
          Best regards,
          Andrian

            Code:
            $VRayLight01.texmap_resolution=10000
This would set VRayLight01's resolution to 10000. Replace VRayLight01 with the name of the Light, 10000 with the desired resolution and run it in the listener

            Regards,
            Thorsten

Hmm.. Never thought of this either and i would be lost with maxscript as well lol. Also maybe it would be a good idea to do some test images to see what kind of resolution etc is most efficient / rendering time to quality.

I'd be interested in knowing if it really made any visible difference, do some tests, someone!

Here are a few quick tests on a WIP

This is a nice HDRI from Peter Guthrie's collection.
Differences are not noticeable, to me....maybe in a more heavy scene???

I think an interior would be a better test......something with multiple/detailed light sources.

Not sure it is worth it for exterior clear-day renders.....I can't see much difference...???
