  • W Angle rotate VRayHDRI?

I see that I can vertically & horizontally rotate the VRayHDRI, but how can I rotate the angle? For example if I use the bitmap loader in 3ds Max I can rotate the W Angle setting if needed and that's what I need to do, except I'd like to do so with the VRayHDRI map.

I would just use the 3ds Max bitmap loader but I'm not getting the same results with the bitmap loader as I do with the VRayHDRI.

Thanks in advance for any info..and I apologize in advance if this has already been mentioned, I searched the forum here and found a couple of similar topics but no exact match.

Ok, maybe I need to be clearer. It looks like VRay is ignoring the 3ds Max localized gamma options that are available when loading a bitmap. Here's a more descriptive outline of the problem I'm encountering:

I have some HDR collections that apparently have a baked in sRGB gamma curve so I need to load them into 3ds Max as gamma 2.2 instead of the typical linear gamma 1.0 for .HDR's. If I load them in via the VRayHDRI map, I can of course adjust the gamma to get a correct result. However I wish to rotate the HDR on the "W axis" instead of just horizontal or vertical rotation. I don't see a way to do that with the VRayHDRI.

So, I figure I'll just use the 3ds Max bitmap loader instead of the VRayHDRI map. However, I need to load these HDR's in with an adjusted gamma setting and when I do that via the bitmap loading options (attached screen grab) it looks to be ignored by VRay.

So how can I use the W angle rotation of the 3ds Max bitmap options AND have local gamma controls?

      Hey Jeff -
That angle of rotation is not really available in the VrayHDRI as you found, but I have no problem with the gamma setting and the Max loader. It works fine here in Vray - just tested it again quickly with RT and it's for sure working there.

FWIW it looks like I just found a solution. I can use the Explicit map channel on the VRayHDRI and assign it to a VRayLightMtl and then assign than to a geometry dome around my scene. With this setup I can modify the gamma on the .HDR using the VRayHDRI settings and then rotate the dome as needed. A bit clumsy but looks like it works and that's all I'm concerned with at the moment.

Thank you for checking & replying Brett. I don't know why the bitmap loader gamma option isn't working for me. I'm using 3ds Max Design 2010 64bit if that matters.

Oh well, at least I now know the bitmap loader gamma should work so I'll have to dig deeper into that one.

Did some more testing and found that with VRay the 3ds Max local bitmap gamma options work as expected with LDR images like JPG's but not with HDR images.

Examples, when using a .jpg image when I adjust the gamma options it changes as one would expect:

            and

However, when I try this with a .HDR image it seems to be ignored (I used gamma 5.0 expecting to see a drastic change):

On the HDRI load settings do you have "real Pixels" and Def Exposure both checked? I also have "display scaled colors by" checked, but the the spinner is locked to 1.

Indeed, I use the same settings.
