  • Don't quite understand VrayPhysicalCamera exposure

Hi all. I started a thread about my difficulties understanding the VraySky/Sun system in the RT forum and the only one responding was Vlado, so I'm moving my subject here as I don't want to burden him with my beginner questions.

What confuses me is that if I create a basic scene with VraySky/VraySun/PhysicalCamera, and set a color or put a bitmap in the Max Environment Map, this background will be very dark once I've dialed in the correct exposure on the VrayPhysicalCamera (for the rest of the scene). Same thing if I create a plane with a vraylightmaterial and a bitmap as a backdrop, it gets severely underexposed. However, if I uncheck the 'exposure' button in the physical camera all geometry in the scene gets overblown, but the background and the plane with the vraylightmtrl will now be correctly exposed. In fact, the only way I can get the scene to be decently exposed with 'exposure' unchecked is if I switch off the vraysky map.

I assume this is by design, and I know that the vraysky/sun solution is very strong compared to a vraylightmtrl, but when I was tinkering I changed the 'physical scale' value in the the max exposure control to a value 50 times higher, the vraylightmatrl came out properly exposed in the render (although it didn't make any difference to vray RT, which I understand doesn't support exposure control) so I was wondering if I was missing something. I have no desire to use the exposure control in max as such, but I'm wondering about the relation between using exposure in VrayPhysicalCamera and when it would be useful not to.

    Thanks,
    Nicinus

In the color mapping section of the V-Ray settings, there is a check-box, "Affect background". Turn it off and the background image will not be affected by the camera exposure.

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Yes, I've noticed that is a fix for the background, but in what situation would you use exposure unchecked? If I have it unchecked it doesn't matter how low I set the sun or even switch it off, as vraysky will be too strong on its own.

Second question, turning off "Affect background" does not work for vray RT, correct? This was probably where I started to get confused. Full circle.
