  • VRayDisplacement Modifier vs. displacement map slot in VRay material

checked the forums, but didn't see anything about this...

seems the accepted method for displacement is the vray displacement modifier, but then why the displacement map slot? is there an advantage to the modifier, and if so what?

thoughts from those who are big into displacement - we don't use it so much but would like to get into it...

    thanks in advance

The modifier gives extra options (like using 2d displacement or subdivision displacement, water level etc), which cannot be done through the material.

Also, especially important in ArchViz work is being able to specify a realworld length for the amount of displacement, ie- 3". vs just a number between 1-100.

I wrote a script which I put on here somewhere which makes displacement modifiers and copies the map from the material slot onto the modifier. Think it was only a base script but might be useful for people who've got scenes with everything material based.
