  • 5 VRProxies grouped then the group instanced millions of times. Good or bad?

    Hi all

If I have 5 vrproxies grouped, and the group get instanced, does that defeat the purpose of proxies or does it not make no difference?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

It does not make a difference with regards to memory usage and render speed.

what if the 5 proxies were not proxies, but just instanced geometry?

They will render as instances as well (probably faster than proxies too) if you have the "Default geometry" option set to "Auto" or "Dynamic".

so then is the proxy concept "yesterday" and we don't need to use proxies anymore? In what situation will we still need to use proxies?
          Kind Regards,

The proxies are useful when you have to keep your scene size small, especially when the objects have more polygons (e.g. several hundred thousand). Having a few different trees in RAM instanced as actual 3ds Max geometry can make scene navigation very difficult, and it also uses more RAM - the objects need to be stored once in the 3ds Max scene, and a second time as render geometry. While 64-bit machines have more memory, it is all to easy to overflow that too
