  • The method for chrome ?!

Trying to make classic chrome for a classic car rendering, but...
maybe am I on the wrong way because my results are creeps !

I want to use an HDRI for reflection :

1 - I use a "VRayMtl" mat and put a "VRay HDRI" in the reflect channel.
But the HDRI pic is not mapped as a (spherical) environnement map but seems a sort of camera map, in front of us !

2 - I tried to obtain chrome with a "Standard Blinn" mat :
HDRI IS mapped as a (spherical) environnement
BUT the render is weird, with blocky red and green pixels in the reflections...

    Help !
    Regards, Fabrice.

    Hi,

The reflection slot in the VRay material contols the amount of reflection, not the reflection itself. For chrome you should use an almost white solid color as the reflection color, and no map in the reflection slot. Then you can put the HDRI in the environment slot in the material, or in the max envronment slot, or in the VRay environment override slot.

It's a bit confusing because in standard max's mat the reflect channel control what is reflect and not tha amount of it.

      But now it works !
      Thanx eggz !

Yes, the VRay material is very different from the standard max material, and takes some getting used to. But it is a LOT better for many things.
