  • Windows / Linux dr

    Hi

is it possible to run dr across different OS's?
I.e. Run vray on a windows workstation, and use Linux slave machines for distributed rendering?

    Cheers

Yes, it should be possible so long as you are running 64-bit Linux and 64-bit V-Ray on the servers. There is an incompatibility with 32-bit gcc which we noticed too late. It is fixed already, but the fix did not go into SP1.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

are we talking about vray stand alone?
How else would you dr on linux without having max (which doesn't run on linux)?
      Kind Regards,

Does vray standalone exists? Or maybe vray for maya... I would like to be able to use vray within max and render on a render farm based on Linux.

Is this fixed in the daily builds? I've tried up to build 12104 (the latest I see for linux).

well seems I've missed something somewhere.
And no response from "the powers that be Vlado" for clarity on the linux issue. In other words how?

Both V-Ray for Maya and V-Ray standalone are available for linux.

It's hard to find any further information other than it's available and obviously supports all major features of vray. What I wonder about is: will you need a license for every dr slave? How does the system work at all? It will process native vray files (.vrmesh?) only. So will it be necessary to export the files before processing (no dr rendering out of 3DS MAX?). Is there any dovumentation available? Thanks in advance.

V-Ray for 3ds Max uses 3ds Max itself on the render slaves, so it can't do DR right away to a Linux machine (3ds Max does not run on Linux, unless you use a virtual machine). However you can export a .vrscene file to V-Ray Standalone, and use that to render on Linux with DR. Note that we don't officially support this workflow for 3ds Max - it works, to a large great extent, but there are things (like 3rd party 3ds Max plugins) which we can't support in the standalone, obviously. Things are different in Maya, where V-Ray Standalone can render anything that V-Ray for Maya can render.

V-Ray Standalone is part of V-Ray for Maya, so you can download the demo and check it out; we do sell V-Ray Standalone separately and it would be best to email us to vray@chaosgroup.com for more information.

                      Best regards,
                      Vlado
