  • Safe to use mix of XP64 and Windows7 x64?

Our workstations are moving over to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Our render farm is still going to be XP64.

We do lots of DR and lots of Backburner rendering.

Am I going to have problems with this mix?
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

I have a mix of XP, Vista and 7, ( XP 32bits and 64 bits) and no problems.

All works fine here, however I have noticed any render slaves on XP64 take a little longer to start rendering with DR for some reason. Not really a problem, just an observation.

If you have all of your network permissions/service issues together, you should be fine.

Well, after lots of wasted time, we've gone back to XP64. For whatever reason, rendering seems faster anyway. I believe if we were to build more up-to-date workstations, windows 7 will proabably be faster, but on our workstations as they stand, we had lots of problems.

Did you make sure you had the latest bios updates installed on the workstations? I found this fixed a lot of issues.

                  Yep, latest BIOS.
The problem, I think, mainly came by the fact that our ATI FireGLv7350 graphics cards didn't have any good drivers - just the ones that ship with Windows 7. Max was very clunky, and certain software aps, such as Magic Bullet, wouldn't work. We aren't yet ready to go down the route of new workstations, so we've gone back to what we know works.
