About photon mapping

Anybody coud explain how to use photon mapping? I can't find right values to obtain same result as with direct calculation. Need to increase multiplier values like caustics?

I think there's a lot of info about it if you search this forum, I remember a very long thread about it. Probabely also on vray.info
