I mentioned this in a similar thread, but the 35mm in 35mm film refers to the width of the actual film not the width of the image produced on it. The images are 36mm x 24mm in size, similar to a full-frame sensor in digital cameras. The images are orientated lengthways along the film, so the 35mm width is essentially 24mm (short side of the image) plus 5.5mm either side for the sprockets.
