That sounds like it makes more sense. Will be interesting to see how that little caustic turns out once Fresnel is checked

the hdri / background looks like its been mirrored, or it is a very symetrical image,
hence why the refracted sphere looks just like the metal ones.

OK, here's with your suggestions GoncaloP. It still looks wrong somehow though.

and J_Bug's suggestion of moving the camera. Same scene and mat settings.

looks totally different to me. the 1st image there is a brown cabinate behind the camera reflected by the steel balls, but there is none in the glass ball.

            Hi,

First post here, but try setting the IOR to just below 1 (.999), this will give you slight refraction and more transparency.

I didn't say it didn't look different.. just still not quite right.

I admit it is getting closer though.

Loose the reflective surface underneath it. This is causing your weird glass. take a look at this:

                no reflection on surface:

highly reflective surface. What you see on the upper half of the glass sphere is REFRACTION and not REFLECTION (except for the lightblue windows)

                blurry metal, this helps too:

So just make a nice material for your stand, the chrome is not that cool and nice anyway imo

                regards,

Ah! that makes sense now. I totally agree that it might look better using a kind of brushed chrome. But, is this how a real glass sphere would react in the same environment? Or is this just something Vray is doing? Anyway, thanks for narrowing down the exact culprit. Now I'm off to get some steel wool and scratch the hell out of the base

Here we go...still needing some work on the caustics and the slight reflection i was trying didn't come out as expected but the glass looks TONS better, thanks flipside.

I tried to animate such thing with simcloth, but couldn't link together a cloth and a rigid body, both animated with simcloth. The cloth (the rope here) doesn't move and the rigid body (the ball) falls.

You will have more success if you post this in a new thread in an appropriate section, instead of here in someone elses totally different thread.

                            regards,
