I was following the problem at vizdepot.com and since jason uploaded his test file over here i was giving it a try. It seems like a max2010 bug. The scene renders fine over here - max2011. I changed the output back to 1 and the f-number to 8, the result looks ok to me. It the 1224 sky from peter.
Its possible there is some issue with the 2010 connectivity extension exr loader, on the comments on my blog a while back, beestee noted that you can get the old exr loader back by removing the fOpenEXR.dlu from the stdplugs folder (I guess you could also just rename it to fOpenEXR.dlu.bak)
Maybe you could try that Jason and let me know how you get on?
Peter - Just re-downloaded it and the HDR was in there this time. Thanks.
SOLUTION - I renamed the fopenEXR.dlu to .bak and just ran a test using the same EXR file, and it seems to render perfect and just as expected. So, this tells me that there is obviously something screwed up with Max's new EXR loader. Attached is a new rendering using Peter's suggested settings.
This should only apply to Max 2010 if you have the connectivity extension installed. But may be applicable in 2011 (still needs testing)
Thank you everyone for your help figuring this out. It's great to know that it's a Max issue and not a Jason issue
