Right so I could make far color white, outside color white, and inside color black, with a huge distance that's greater than the bbox of the surface, and apply a curve to give it 100% gain.

in my test I have found the distance texture to have one major limitiation: it required a target object(s) for the distance, and the object it self t cannot cast distance onto inself, it comes up with circular reference error. Now in some cases we would use amb occlusion to apply on to the entire surface to create special effect masks. However it cannot be used with displacement, and the distance texture seems to fall a little short of filling in the amb occlusion. Vlado do you think its possible to extend its functionality to include "affect all" surfaces so it indeed behaves like ambient occlusion but can work with displacement.
