Well for one you can render your main and ao pass at the same time.

One thing to be cautious about though is if you're using high dmc settings to get clean aa, the vray dirt in your extra tex will also be calculated using these settings. It's often overkill and can slow your render down a lot - The AO is being added on to the calculations of everything else so you don't get it for free. I find that if you use adaptive subiv aa and vray override, set your vray dirt samples to 24 and the subdiv aa makes it render damn quick.

Another thing to keep in mind with the extraTex RE is that it's not color mapped (AFAIK). So your Ambient Occlusion pass generated with an ExtraTex RE may appear much darker than one generated in the RGB color pass. Just something to keep in mind.

yes, can this be done easily? can always do it in post or add backplates and such, but it gets messy...

I use Vray extra tex too. It works very well. My only problem is windows. If i exclude them from extra tex i get pure black. I want windows to appear pure white in extra tex tho. Anyone know how? If i include windows in extra tex i get a grey scale in edges...

              Cheers

It's on the "to do" list to be able to specify the "empty" color for VRayExtra tex where the texture is not computed.
