  • V-Ray 2.0 + Hair and Fur Modifier

Is it possible to render the hair with V-Ray Materials? Simply pluggin a V-Ray Material into the MentalRay Slot does nothing.

Hm, not right now, but I'll see if I can hack this in.

      Ohhh, here's my christmas list:
+1 for plugging in a vray material
+1 for beeing able to access uv from the growth geometry plus having a w-coordinate for the hair itself
+1 for making mrprims mode renderelements multimatte compatible
      and well
+1 for a vray marschner shader (but that would be maybe next christmas )

We've been doing a lot of hair & fur with vray and mrprims recently, and right now you are quickly getting to a dead end and need to render out as geometry, which is really limiting.

      Best regards,
      Michael

+1 for all of that and maybe more possibilities on H&F properties like invisible to cam etc would be great

Can't do much about that; I don't think the Shave&Haircut engine keeps any connection between the original emitter and the hair once the hair is generated. VRayFur does this, though.

            Coming back to this again...
Talking about VrayFur - coolest thing would be to be able to use Shave&Haircut guidesplines for vray fur... So adding a hair and fur modifier modifier, set haircount to zero and add then add VrayFur, that is getting its styling and dynamics from the hair and fur guidesplines below... That would be awesome!

VRay already has the math built into VRayFur for rendering tons and tons of hair & fur geometry at high speed, and it is also insanely fast with global illumination. Implement that into Hair & Fur or Hairfarm would make VRay the ultimate render engine for character artists and so on. I think it would be very valuable for VRay in the industry to really, really support hair and fur rendering like Mental Ray and Renderman does.

i'm so totaly agree with you. Right now we are working on a character project where we test some fur solutions and it is frustrating, all the hair and fur tools available for Max (HairAndFur, Ornatrix, Hairfarm) have really cool styling tools and fast Buffer Hair, but if things like vraylights, GI or reflective and refractive materials come in to play you have to use Geometry Hair and than you better have enough memory .
On the other side there is VrayFur where you can render millions of hairs with nearly no memory usage, GI and all the other stuff (btw. with the right shader it can look really.. really awesome). Unfortunately VrayFur in it's part has to less styling capabilities to use it effectively for characters.

I also agree that the coolest solution would be to support HairAndFur and plugins like Hairfarm (the most promising Hair plugin) with the VrayFur geometry. But i think in case of third party plugins the initiative would have to come from plugin provider.

Multimatte support for the Hair&Fur primitives is already added for the next update; looks like UVs might be possible too, after all. Custom material support will also be added for the next update. Does that leave anything else?

                    Best regards,
                    Vlado

Wohoo! That's great news! I'm really looking forward - sounds like hair and fur finally will be really production ready!

I'm so happy with these improvements that i nearly don't dare to continue, it's really just to collect what has been thought of in this thread, so maybe
                      - invisible to camera etc.
                      - Marschner shader
                      - beeing able to use the vray fur system with guidesplines from hair and fur, ornatrix, because it is simply sooo much faster and the ram impact is, well, different

Again - just collecting it for the future wishlist, what you've achieved is really really great and helpful! Vray forever!

                      Thanks a lot,
                      Michael

any plans to generate vray fur off of shave and haircut guidesplines...?

Great! I haven't seen this thread!
everything is very cool, in fact, users just need to manage hair&fur like mr does...

And Vlado, try to get rid of the tip fade bug : ( http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...light=hair+tip )
