  • interior - long render time

    Hello everybody,

i have a problem with the extremely long rendering time of my interior. 2 i7 860 PCs render from more than 2 days on a 1800 x 930 pixel scene and the processor are using most of the time only 20 % of their power. the exteriors of this model are rendered as they have to. I am using max design 2011 and vray 1.50. a lot of materials have got reflection and a couple of them opacity maps. the properties of my scene are:
image sampler: adaptive DMC with min/max 1/6
gi: IM on medium and HSph/Intrp. 45/25 and LC Subdiv.: 750 sample size 0,02
    DMC Sampler: Noise: 0,007, min: 32, glob:2

the scene preset as an attachement

    thanks in advance

i'm running max 2010 so can't look at scene, but the DMC setting of min samples:32 sounds quite high. do you need to take it that high? if you have specific materials that are blurry/need higher sampling you could change the samples on that material.
also the global subdivisions multiplier at 2 is probably slowing things down quite a lot as well.
2 days on 2 pc's sounds wayyy too long!

not sure why cpu usage would only be at 20%? should be able to get to 100% or close when rendering.

      How about your memory settings?

        Try those settings :

global switchs - filter maps OFF
adaptive dmc image sampler 1/4 - use DMC sampler thresh ON
        GI post processing contrast 0,5
        IM : -3/-1 hsph 60 / interp 30 / .25/.25/.15 (thresh)
        detail enhancement off
sample lookup overlapping - multipass OFF
LC 800/0.02 - prefilter 20 - use lc for glossy rays ON - filter none
        DMC sampler : 0.85/0.015/8/2.0
dynamic mem limit : 6000 - geometry dynamic - (hilbert)

Let me know if you solve your troubles

        Cheers,
        Thomas

i tried the settings that Thomas suggested and it seems to work as it has to. the processor is green the whole time long.

thanks a lot for the useful answer
