Does anybody know of a good tutorial that talks about shorelines? I have a lake that meets the shore line and I want to avoid the sharp material transition from water to grass. I am having a hell of a time with plug-ins so I would like to do this plug-in free.

Tessellate the geometry a bit at the edge and use vertex paint to paint the subtle transition is what I'd do for free

I have never tried the vertex paint, I'll check it out.

If you're on 2011 definately check out Viewport Canvas. It helped me a LOT drawing masks for Hair on a character.

Viewport Canvas is actually a-grade stuff. It's no ZBrush, but it's really got everything there with layer/PSD support. I've used it a fair bit now and as instinct says, its a real time saver! Great for doing quick material masks and stuff.

When I paint a mask, in the Viewport Canvas, it looks great, but when I exit the Viewport Canvas everything gets jagged. I am picking 1024x1024 as my bitmap size. What am I doing wrong.

Stretched UVs or too small of a texture map in that area.

I see... that is were mapping a checker pattern first might help. so much to know!

an automatic option to do similar things, is to use the vray distance tex to control the reflectivity of the water, reducing in say, the last 30 cm from the shore. that way it really becomes invisible at the edges, and the hard water boundary is eliminated.. can also be used to blend from grass to mud based on distance to water geometry.

vray distance tex is working great, but when I apply it to my density slot (autograss), I can't control the uvw mapping. I can put the vray distance tex in a material slot, it looks good when I preview it, but the UVW coords do not translate when I drop it into autograss's density slot. Does this make sense? I am almost there, but I am missing something.

maybe you could use Coloredge by Itoosoft....I used it for doing some painted lines on asphalt with geometry so they don't look that sharp and it worked great.

still havent given up autograss bobby?
i really suggest you think about another grazing solution such as Forest Pack.
Autograss is hell when working with UVWs.

They actually got me working. They gave me a 10 license pack, which fixed my issue, so I am using it again.
