just a follow up question. how do i keep low render times with good glossy reflections? i cant seem to get a good quality glossies even if i set my subdivisions to 64.
Thats ok. From my experience, glossy reflections will always slow down render times. If you are rendering an animation with no moving objects apart from the camera you can probably speed up things by choosing "use lightcache for glossy reflections" in the lightcache rollout. Im pretty sure this speeds things up although you do lose a bit of quality. The other thing is to maybe set your subd's for the glossys to 40 or 50 and then keep your noise threshold at about 0.02 or maybe 0.01. I used to go to 0.001 and the render times were always a lot longer. Just worth experimenting with those figures on a per scene basis really. Other people have probably got other methods to speed things up.
