  • Render elements hassles.

I use RE a lot, but in combination with the Vray Frame Buffer they are a pain to use with any kind of pass manager: they almost never get saved or are a difficult to get set up to save automatically with the main render.

I've just broke down and finally bought ProEXr to get around some of this, but I now have a different hassle: I have to use the Vray Save option (VRIMG save rollout) to get EXR's that are actually layered, and that means the pass manager save options (RPM and LPM) don't work and I'm back to square one.

Is it possible to get Vray to save layered EXR without using that specific save option?

Is there also any way to use some kind of string/command/hack to get the saved name of renders assigned via the file name? For example, in LPM I can enter "$Max" in its render dialog and it will name each render with the Max filename. This is super handy and helps me avoid overwriting renders by accident. Possible with the VFB at all?

Doesn't RPM allow you to work with the V-Ray VFB render output?

    Best regards,

I can use RPM to override the render dialog and make use of the "split render" or "save vrimg" options to save render elements, but that would be the only consistent way to get it to save the elements. It's the same with LPM. The downside is that it no longer makes use of the automatic naming tools of the pass manager and I have to set all that stuff twice.

Brett, I've gotten this to work before with no hassles, but not with strip rendering. I don't have my license anymore of RPM. I'm sure you already know about it but in the options preferences there is (near the bottom) it says "force save of vrimg file as exr" or something like that. Are you using that currently?

          Hey Colin -
I can't seem to find that option in RPM and nothing I do seems to get it to save Vray render elements. I hadn't used it in a long while but I remember having issues before too.

Ah - found it! I was not aware of the Vray specific output thing in the preferences. That does the trick!

            Thanks Colin.

              YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

It took me forever to find that stupid thing to support the VRayFB, but once I did, magic happened. Glad to save you some headaches. I love RPManager.

Yeah it's one of the best values I've gotten out of a plugin and the support was good too. Can't believe i missed that whole thing, but the docs are a bit thin on the ground and it is a pretty complex tool.
                Tks again.

I can't for the life of me find this magic button that you guys are talking about... Brett would you mind doing a quick screen gram so I can see where it is?

Screen grabs of the RPM interface, note the rollout at the bottom of the second image, that is where the save options for the VRIMG/EXR stuff is located.

I am currently having some other problems with the images not saving properly, but not sure where that is coming from just yet. Might just be a Vray/BBurner thing.

at the top under "Output" near the bottom is the preferences dialog for outputting files. It's there.
