  • To someone who works at Chaos...

Hopefully this is a quick question... We need to move our Vray license server to a different server, but can't afford down time.

Can we go ahead and install it on the new server, and send the request for the license code while keeping the current one running on the existing server? Then once we get the authorization code, take down the existing license server, and authorize the new server?

We don't have software licenses, so there is no way to get you an authorization code. You just need to move the dongle with the licenses. If moving the dongle is going to take time, and if you have an extra dongle, some temporary licenses can be arranged.

    Best regards,

Thanks for the reply. We don't have an extra dongle around, so we will wait a few days and try to find the time. Our ATG (Advanced Technology Group) is worried about possible delays in getting the new code because of time zone differences.

Well, you don't really need any new codes from us - it is just a matter of physically moving the dongle.

Hmm.... I will pass that along. Our current license is 1.5, but we upgraded to 2.0, we just haven't installed it. They may have been wanting to complete the upgrade at the same time as moving the server.

I will tell them to go ahead and move it tonight, and hopefully all goes well. Even if we don't get the upgrade completed, at least we are off of the server that needs to be replaced.

Well you need to uppgrade the dongels as well, i dont know if you can do It on the fly.. Else you will need extra dongels pre-prepered for vray 2.... Best solution get extra dongels install new lic server with 2.0 dongels

We still haven't upgraded to 2.0 but I wanted to post a follow up to this...

It wasn't the upgrade that our IT guy was only nervous about, we were also moving our license to a virtual workstation, which was going to provide some difficulty. As you can probably guess a virtual workstation does not have a USB port directly associated with it.

We were able to use a piece of software called 'USB ReDirector' that allowed a USB port to be associated with the virtual workstation. The hardware key is then plugged into that port and everything is working fine.

As soon as we finish our current project we are going to deploy our 2.0.

The virtual machine still runs on a nativce OS. Why dont you just use the native OS for the license?
                  Kind Regards,

It was originally on one of the servers but ATG (Advanced Technology Group) wanted to move Backburner and Vray License Server off of the one of the server and onto its own Virtual Machine. Not sure why, but we have an extensive network that involves many factors. It may just be to move it into to its own space so they don't have to worry about it, and I can log in and restart the license server if needed.

I just thought I would share in case anyone else needs to go this route.

Many VM solutions support USB ports now... which one are you using?

                      Best regards,

I had to ask because it is not my area of expertise. We use Windows Servers so they like to keep everything Windows. So in this case we are using Windows Server Hyper-V, which does not support USB ports.

I believe Microsoft or someone close to the situation said they will probably never support it natively because if a physical box fails and the VM is moved to a new server then the USB link would be broken.

But how this part of our setup works is largely out of my knowledge base.
