  • magic bullet for antialiasing?

    Hi there --

I've been struggling to get clean video out of a scene I'm working on, and I thought I'd now just ask for some advice....

I have a high-detail, but low texture count architectural walkthru of a vast urban space. I've tried a variety of combinations of Vray anti-aliasing and Max AA filters, but still havent hit upon a combo that yields clean video. I think my problem lies in the comlexity of the task: the Max AA filter seems to be having as much influence as the Vray. For instance, I've found that the Soften filter seems useless, I hate the blur of the Video filter. Area is as close as I've come to decent, but it's still not good.

I can post scene files, if that's helpful...

    Thanks,

    Dave Hitt

its not your video codec settings is it?

      Hey there --

Don't think it's a codec issue. I rendering to NTSC and have never had problems of this sort with the DV codec I use...

It may be easier with an image to point out what may be an issue.

I like the cook-variable since it gives fairly good results and can adjust the blur... it also looks cleaner then Area. Catmul is really nice but has little variation... on the other hand, works great with mobo, since it creats a nice contrast between sharp and motion blurred objects.

as far as texture AA... I usually control this isn the Vray AA settings. if textures look too blurred, it is usally becuase you have Adaptive AA with (-1, 2)... There are sevral way to "fix" this, up you Adaptive AA to (0,2) or (1,2), use simple two level with (1,4), or, if time is no matter, use the single variable option at 4... this gives amazing results in Texture AA, but is very expensive (time wise).

          sloppy antialiasing

Okay, here is a link to a file that demonstrates problems. Actually, after I compressed to DIVX, the problems got worse but, basically, the issues I'm concerned about are on the "grand staircase" that the camera is moving towards. I can't get these pixels to calm down! They're just a simple Vray material with a diffuse color.

ahhh....the wonderful phenomenon of morrier patterns

I'm currently dealing with a similar situation with a very very similar shaped staircase

at 720x480 I get the nasty patterns, but at 1920x1080 they go away (i know, not the answer you wanted)

So, increase the quality of the antialiasing, or render at a higher resolution are the only options i can come up with

                  My estimates:
Adaptive AA set to (0,2) = removes 90% of problems
Adaptive AA set to (1,2) = removes 99.9% of problems
Simple two level AA set to (1,4) = removes 95% of the problem
Simple two level AA set to (2,4) = removes 99% of the problem

                    here goes...

Okay, rendering at high res is not really a viable route. However, I'll attempt the AA settings you guys recommended, along with Cook Variable.

I'll let you know. I really appreciate the intelligence...

Wow, hypnotising animations with Vray! If you watch it long enough, all these tiny people start jumping out of your screen, really!
