  • Wacom Tablet

    Hi

Does anyone use a Wacom tablet for 3D work?

We are thinking that they may increase our productivity and allow for a more loose, hand drawn image but, have only spoken to a few people in other industries who love them.

There is also the issue of size of tablet, A5 - I think is the smallest, going up to A3.

    Thanks

wacom tablet useful for some things

It´s great for subd modeling, it puts far less strain onto the wrist and tendons when you do a lot of clicking. Be sure to get one that hast at least 2 buttons (the cheap Wacoms only have 1) on the pen ´cause in max you need all three to navigate and start and end tools, (pen tip = LMB, pen button 1 = MMB, pen button 2 = RMB). For animation and precise modelling I still use the mouse. A pen is never 100% "stable", there´s always slight jittering in your hand (at least I never met a person who doesn´t jitter).

i love my wacom tablet...but it only works on an old mac, so i can't use it in max

that aside, there are some really nice ones that also function as displays....great for photoshop work

I recently bought a tablet but it wasn't a Wacom, it was a Trust. It usually exists 3 sizes. A6, A5 and A4. I have been working with a Wacom A4 before and it's too big. A5 is perfect. Here in sweden a Wacom A5 USB costs about 400$ meanwhile the one I bought (Trust) costs about 90$!!!! And as I said. I have been working with a Wacom tablet before and I can't say I notice any difference(exept for the prize. :P). It has 2 buttons with a pressure sensitive point on it. But working with it in a 3d app...hmmm wouldn't prefer that over a mouse. I only use it for painting textures.

I Have a wacom tablet INTUOS 2 A5 Size and Basse is right...its the perfect size for it to be on your desk...Sometimes I use it for modeling because its really just like the mouse...except for the jitter stefan mentioned...paid alot for it im affraid...$530...someties i really hate living in Africa!

But anyway i guess waht i love about it the most is that your whole screen is "mapped" onto the tablet...instead of moving your wrist u move your whole hand to get to certain areas of the screen...thats nice!

Thanks for your opinions, really helpful information !

If I am only using the tablet for photoshop work, are two buttons on the digital pen sufficient?

the more the better, because you can assign the buttons to different features, select, pencil, paintbrush, etc...
