This issue may occurs with huge number of objects + modifiers in stacks.
In that case, the renderer may have difficulties to transform the whole mess into a comprehensive bunch of polys for the renderer.
You can cut that by collapsing stacks and even attaching things, but you'll loose the hability to get back into your stack and modifications of course.
A solution would be to make a "pre-render" version of your scene (ie. collapsed) before unleaching Vray or whatever your renderer is.
Else, Vray seems to handle instances well (yes, true), but after a certain amount of objects+stacks, it's crashing like hell (or like any scanline I've seen ).
Vray has some Problems with Polygon Objects. Mainly because of smoothing. I know this is in my opinion a hard bug, but with the weak updates in the last month, there where no chance of fixing that.
so, best is to apply a smooth or mesh modifier above poly objects... A nother fix is to convert poly object to mesh and then back to polys... Well, I think it's not our job to work around bugs but... you know...
