Well above was asked if they could render at the same time...which is not allowed by any of the home licenses as i take it. I also fail to see that "most programs" allow that. I haven't seen it too often. And regarding that dongle i wonder what you consider "regular use". Max and VRay are different products, they have different licenses, and once again a standard 3d studio max license does NOT give you the option to install a second copy. And as pointed out earlier subscription is more expensive then the 2.0 upgrade for a single year.

I just want the functionality of dragging the dongle around without actually doing that.
What happens if i lose the dongle? Did i lose my license?
What happens if i break it? How long do i have to wait before i can continue to work AT ALL?
The broken dongle is probably because the owner sat on it or something (Dragging dongle around -> dongle in pants). Hammering it with a blunt object is not regular use here
A VPN sounds good, but even with 99% uptime of the internet, those 3 days a year that you cannot use Vray, could be crucial ones.Last edited by BcM; 17-02-2011, 09:04 AM.

@ instict
What do you mean?
I can render with max at home and at the office at the same time.
This also counts for al adobe programs.
The subscription of 3dsmax also gives you acces to their support, so it's not fair to say you are just paying for a home license.
A max subscription is around 520 euro (in the Netherlands) so this is half the cost of a vray license and cheaper than upgrading every year.

To be honest i would not consider "sitting on it" regular use of a dongle...and i would also say this is "applying extreme forces". Even tho i can see that it might easily happen if you don't take care.
Given that Chaosgroup and Autodesk are different it is perfectly reasonable that they have different licensing schemes in my eyes. Just as valid as having different support quality (thank god)
Anyways. If you prefer to pay a license worth of bucks a year for being allowed a second install instead of buying a non-expiring license for the same amount of money then you are free to wish for that
but i don't get it heh.
Anyways. You are free to think different of course...

I was referring to the update when saying "cheaper" and the subscription is around 100 Bucks more here in .de
In addition you get killer support with vray for free. If this stops for non subscribing users then i will hate you.
Subscription advantage is also giving you things that you already get for free with vray (non major version upgrades etc).
So if the same scheme would be used for vray you would not get these anymore unless you subscribe...i don't like that idea...

No need to hate
Just trying to get the most out of vray.
I agree, we don't want the support system of Autodesk.
Still the subscription cost arount 10 %, So if you can get the same deal with Chaosgroup you will pay around 90 buck a year.
I don't see the problem, if you get a home license, support and automatic upgrades.

As instinct mentioned having a second dongle pretty much gives you a full second license - the only thing stopping anyone from using it as a full second license is trust in this case. If chaos wanted to protect their business they'd have to make some method of checking which dongle is in use on each license which would need an internet connection either way.
The dongle is there to be portable! Your old license back in 1.4x days wasn't, so now that you have a dongle you're actually getting more options and flexibility!

All in all you would have the same prices, with the extra home license.
And indeed, no need to hate. We can keep it friendly hereThe only thing that needs to be hated is the idea of dongles.

The dongle doesnt help one bit in protecting their business. Here in the Netherlands you can get hefty fine for using illegal software. That works better than any dongle ever will.Last edited by BcM; 17-02-2011, 09:23 AM.

I assume a general CopyProtection debate is not going to lead anywhere so i am skipping that hehe.
You are making assumptions on prices of support models that have been thought about. Just because it is 10% with max does not mean it would be the same price with vray.
As Vlado wrote above Chaosgroup is a lot smaller than AD and they would have to invest a lot to provide a support structure to allow for guarantueed priority support and whatnot.
They would also probably have to switch to more standardized release cycles (beeing ready or not, just like AD) because you have to justify the subscriptions.
Take nuke for example. The maintenance is a lot more then 10%, render licenses are charged extra and renderlicenses need extra maintenance too. There's a plethora of different
subscription models. And due to the difference of the companies i seriously doubt a subscription scheme by chaos would match the one of AD.

And by the way, for you to install a home copy of MAX, isn't legal as you think. Read the whole thing carefully. For it to be legal, your company has to own your home computer.Kind Regards,

Does anyone here really think that the guys at Vray haven't already thought about every last possibility regarding licenceing???
And considering that they put an extreme amount of thought into their software, you would expect that they would do the same with their business, which i am sure they have.
Just a reminder to all the guys complaining......Have you ever run a software company???? Do you have any idea that businesses are forced to make decissions that are not always perfect, just because often there is no perfect solution......sorry guys.....it's an imperfect world we live in so better get used to it.
Cheers
