When I use Animation (prepass), is Vray doing any more than simply calculating an IRmap for each frame you specify?

While V-Ray doesn't do anything special about the GI calculations, the format of the irradiance map is slightly different in that case. Each irradiance sample stores the render ID of the object for which the sample is calculated. Also, the samples for moving objects are stored in object space, rather than world space. This makes the interframe interpolation more robust.
