  • Anyone wondering about 3ds Max 2012 ' Viewport performance' compared to 2011..

Works like a dream. No flickering - no lag

I have a scene of only 65,000 polys and with 2011 Max my performance was shockingly back with an FX3800 (correct drivers used).

Having been given access to 3ds Max 2012 beta,i have tested the same model with Nitrous and D3D and everything is smooth, orbiting around the object is clean - no lag - NO FLICKER.

No i don't work for Autodesk - Just someone who wanted a set of tools that work

Also tested a sofa with quite alot of detail this is 3 million polys and still get between 20 and 30 FPS.

well it sounds good. Can't wait to get my hands on it when it's released in I'm geussing 2 weeks, 3 weeks at the most (as per Ken's post saying it will be released same time as last year)
Let's hope it's all good this time round and they didn't break other things
    Kind Regards,

But try to do simple massfx simulation. Try adding 2601 sphere and then switch to smooth hilights + edged faces -=- 1fps on my gtx280.... Hehe

I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Paul was that on Nitrous or D3D...

I think im going to stick with D3D - Will keep testing it out on large scenes and see if i can get anything similar

I've been dealing with this display performance problem with Max 2011 ever since I upgraded to Windows 7 and got a FX6000, performance is worse than when I had a FX3800 and I've talked to Autodesk & Nvidia about it. They both say I shouldn't be having this problem but when you look at the list of supported hardware most of the Nvidia Quadro cards aren't on it. I've found out that systems with 12 cores or more running Windows 7 with Nvidia cards are having this problem, my questions is will the new dispaly in 2012 fix these problems?

all i can say is 2012 has fixed my issues of jittery, sluggish horrible viewport performance. Its now responsive,no 1 second lag like with 2011..Hopefully others will have the same view when they test.I have started using only D3D as Nitrous looks nice but has no options to tweak or at least in the beta you cant.. D3D works like a dream for me.Would like to know anyone else's views on it

I think problem is in massfx, because physx showing boundaries of each objects (blue lines) and its really slow down max (as I can say in max 2011 for sure). They said (nvidia couse they make physx now) make an option to hide it, but as we can see they didnt). So I think if you use RayFire (great plugin for using physx), viewport will be smooth. This problem is not to do anythink with max 2012.

I must say, I ´m impressed by the new viewport.
It can display a lot of important shaders/features even with very high poly counts.
It´s not just a fancy looking feature that works with a sphere and a box.
You can have realtime AO(Skylights), Falloff Maps, Bump, Specular, Transparency, Shadows,
                  selfillu and so on.

Here are some test from the beta
                  (I´m allowed to post them)

Single Object 12 mio polys with falloff/selfillu
                  http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/m...th_falloff.jpg

                  4 audis with AO
                  http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/m.../s_audi_AO.jpg

                  AO+Directlight
                  http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/m...sh_AO_spec.jpg

                  AO+Falloff
                  http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/m...di_falloff.jpg

7Mio Polys AO, Directlight, Shadows, Transparency Mapping
                  http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/m...9_mio_poly.jpg

A Screen captured animation to show high polycounts, copying (not instancing) of objects
                  an the resulting performance.
                  http://sorceress.netfrag.org/optix/m...wport_demo.mov

All these new features/visual styles can just be turned on or off pretty quickly and you´re
back to something like a normal DX Viewport.
Of course I can just speak for myself, but I´m more than satisfied with nitrous.
                  Thumps up !!!

(Images and animation were made on a GEForce 275 GTX)

                  cheers,

                  sam

and another real question is.. when will it be available??

But probably with my Quadro FX4500 I won't able to use those viewport features.

I think most importantly scene explorer is finally fast enough to be useable. NO MORE editting INI! YES!
Nitrous is so far so good.
