  • vray and opteron?

has anybody had the good fortune to try vray on an opteron box? ive read reviews that say its not as fast for rendering as a dual 2.8 xeon, but that was standard 32 bit scanline...

at siggraph apparently sputterfish were demonstrating an x86-64 optimised version of brazil, that in their words rendered 'significantly faster' than a dual xeon at 3.06 gig ...also i heard a rumour that industrial light and magic just bought a whole heap of opterons to run mental ray.... i need some solid facts here i mailed vlado about the possibility of a 64 bit version of vray, buit no response....

Don't expect a response until they get back from siggraph. I don't believe they have internet access all the time at the moment.

the report is incorrect, the brazil running on the opterons (i was there) was not 64-bit optimized. max needs to be 64 bit itself before plugins for it can be 64-bit.

i don't know who said it was 'significantly faster,' although it was very fast (running in 32-bit mode).

And if you look in the Shading SDK for vray, it says that it(Vray one would assume) is made specifically to be easy to port up to 64bit when needed without too much hassle.. (Paraphrased)

I guess a stand-alone version of VRay could be made 64-bit even though max still running 32-bit.

          Am I wrong?

i would have thought so... i was also under the impression that a plugin could run in 64 bit mode irrespective of whether max is fully 64 bit... but im no programmer... anyone out there who is?
