  • OT: Dual AMD boards, please help

i´m no hardware crack and i hope you guys can help me. i want to setup a new renderslave for my home. i already have a dualsystem that works great (asus a7m266-d with two XP (!!) 1800). for the second one i wanted to buy a msi or tyan board with new XP cpu´s, no MP´s. now i have heard, that the new XP cpu´s (higher than xp1900) are not able to run together in a dual board. is that right ? i have searched in the net, but there a many diffrent suggestions. and what about the frontside bus ? higher cpu´s than xp2400 run with 300 o 333. as i now it´s not possible to run them in a board with a 266 bus. is that right ? so confusing for a hardware amateur like me

i know, it´s not a normal vray post, please forgive me
but i know that a lot of people here work with a dual amd system, so i hope that someone can tell me somethings at first hand.

yes, but you use mp´s. this is the better solution, but i they are 3-4 times the price of a xp cpu. this is just a renderslave. i will wait til autum and see what will hapen to the opterons. then i wanted to buy me a new "big" machine. the only mp cpus that i can effort in my budget now are the mp2000. .....i just don´t know what to do

          hi metroberlin,

I use a Dual Amd MP 2000 on the same Asus board, works like a dream. Im not really qualified to give you advise on hardware. But there is this guy Greg Hess on the CGArchitect forums who knows a lot about hardware. When I was building my system I asked him a lot of questions.

Just post a question on the CG Architect forum directed to him, He's very helpful.

          regards,
          mark

I guess I was a little late with my reply. Greg has replied to your query on CGArchitect.

              Hi
for dual cpu systems, you can always check www.2cpu.com and their forum...
I have myself an MSI with 2x2200mp. Works great. Some heat problems but i guess i need a better case

              goodluck

If you can view the XP's before buy it, you can know if they work as Mp's without problem if the last bridge of L5 is open. For some pictures of this go to http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...aid=393&page=2

Anyway, MP's are better processors, because have "bulletproof" stability and have been tested more than XP's
(I have the asus a7m266-d with 2 Athlon XP 2000+)

                Regards

Be sure to buy a good case with good airflow, and maybe some decent cpu heatsinks.
I should have done it before... now i have to buy a new case ...

                    bye

my tower is always open. i don´t care about the noise, i live on a main street with a lot of traffic. sometimes i think berlin is just full of cars. can´t imagine that there are more cars in new york

i have ordered now two mp2400, thanks for the suggestions.

thank you for the hints. now i have my 2 mp2400+ and i use my "old" dual xp1800 as the renderslave. oh glory days. there are so many animations in the pipeline that i had to stop because i needed the machine for my normal work. now i can rnder in the back and control it via remotedesktop. no, not the one from microsoft. it´s a great tool and it works perfectly and very very fast. you can almost work on the remote machine as normal.

Which remote desktop application are you using if not the one from microsoft? Radmin? VNC?
