  • Glass - self-illum

    Hello,

I'd need to achieve sort of self-illuminated / "glowing" glass material, for little showcases. But tbh, I don't manage to do that ... a self-illum feature is cruely missed in VRay material for me any idea, please ?

    Many thanks in advance !

    Regards.

I think you need to think how this 'glowing glass' thingy would be created in real life. Glass doesn't self-illuminate. There would be a light somewhere behind the glass. Build it correctly (from a real world point-of-view) with the light and the piece of glass, and start from there.

      Hello Tricky,

Thanks for your advice, but that's exactly how I initially did things ... the fact is that sometimes client wants / needs something that looks attractive, independently of how this will look like in reality. That's why I think tools like VRay should allow users to cheat and have controls that go above "pure-physically-correct" behavior.
I've tried a VRay Blend material mixing glass and VRay Light material, but without much success so far

      Thanks again.

Try to use the VrayBlendMaterial and to achieve the Light emitting of the material u can put this inside an Override Material.

        Best regards

Is this for animation or still images? If the latter (or indeed the former if you are skilled in After Effects etc), you could fake it in post if you get mattes for the glowing glass.

I had to do just that effect last week.
The best way is indeed a vray blend material.
Base layer is vray light material (you can also map a subtle gradient in there for extra realism)
Next layer is just a mirror material if you want a solid effect or some real glass settings.
            Reflect, repent and reboot.
            Order shall return.
