I think that HSV exponential is a great add, because its the way we are able to get enough skylight in interior scenes, using the necessary multipliers to get the light fly into the objects that needs to lighted and get a nice GI detail, but we also need to increase the irradiance map settings and hemisphere subdivisions.
That also brings a great increase in the render time, so the Skylight portals is the answer to locate and increase the necessary detail coming from the openings even using a low irradiance map settings and low multipliers, thats why they are very usefull.

    Makes sense?

Here is a test I ve run last night with HSV exponential color mapping and only skylight, there is no lights involved in this scene.

      Irradiance map settings

      Rate Min./Max. -3,0
      Clr threshh. 0.025
      Nrm thresh. 0.025
      Dist thresh. 1.0

      Hsph subdivisions 100
      Interpolation samples 15

      Skylight 3.0 (not enough)

      Dark multiplier value 8.0

      render time 12 hours

BTW: HSV means Hue Saturation Values

Pretty cool, no wonder it took 12h with that clr and nrm values!

You also didn't use skylight portals? If you did, do you place it on the inside or outside the window?
