Beginner question

Now you can tell how much I know just by this question. Which is pretty much nothing at this point. So here goes.

I am using VRay free currently.

So when it comes to setting up an exterior scene for lighting, do I still want to set up a fakeosity? Or will turning the GI on be enough?

GI should be enough, extra lights are just going to slow it down. Most people just use a Direct light with V-Ray area shadows for the sun, note that unless you use the overide the environment color/map will be you skylight. Note that a "skydome" will block the skylight so it is best to use the environment and use the overide for skylight.
