  • HDRI disappears on some machines

    Hi everyone,

I am making a first animation with vray and i am using a hdri map as my max environment. When i do a test render on our network not all machines render the hdri map in the scene. I use standard max netrender.

Does anyone know what the problem is here ?

    Thanks,

    Erik

You need to load the HDRi map from something like \\server\c\maps\tralala.hdr

And if some machines doesn't have access to that machine they will render without the HDRi map.

Thanks for the quick reply, but this is not the case.

I am using max for a few years now and i came across this path problem a while ago and all the machines have the right pathes and acces.

Strange thing is that it also happens when i render without the hdri map.

I have reflective water in my scene and in one picture the water reflects the environment and in the other one not.

Can i install vray on each machine without authorizing it on every machine ? (we have 15 machines).

I just made a strange (or not) discovery.

When i log on at the machines that were not rendering the environment under the same name that vray was installed on the environment reflection renders correctly.

Is this a bug or are you supposed to log on under the same name as vray was installed under ?

Could be wrong, but this sounds like a network issue. Max and Vray rely on windows networking to access maps from central location. If the path is \\server\blahblah that means each computer has to have access rights to folder and files on that machine. If the user you are logged in as doesn't have the access priviledges, then max won't be able to load the maps and they won't be used. I would check the Users / Groups and access rights on the main machine.

If this is the case, it doesn't have much to do with Vray or Max, but rather the brilliance that is known as MS Networking.

            Tanks for your reply,

It was indeed something like that, but not an acces problem.

The machines that went wrong were logged in under the administrator account and that account doesn't use mapped drives. So in the beginning thomas was right, if you load it from an unc location you won't get errors like mine.

Thanks Thomas, i didn't understand your answer at first but now it works fine.

I dont think this is the problem...

              Hello there --

I have the same issues outlined above; ie a network slave will not render HDRI maps. However, I don't think my problem is caused by any of the issues noted above.

The textures are actually stored locally on the machine. All files are referenced using //UNC naming AND all my machines have the same level of priviledges with regards to one another.

I THINK THIS IS A BUG; all my other maps are found just fine...

                Hi dave,

When you place your hdri map in your material editor do you point it out in a unc path or on your local drive.
This is what was causing my problem.

Well, I was having the same problem and indeed, it was the UNC path.
But, shouldnt this be solved with the INCLUDE MAPS checkbox ?

In someway can the HDRI maps be included in the list ?

                  cheers
                  Alex.
