by the way: where are the specular highlights on Vray material?
i remember, i read something about the use of blur`s highlight-only material but don`t know how to use it. neil blevins uses highlight-only in combination with shellac material. but this doesn`t seem to work in vray.........how to get specs?

Specular highlights in real world are glossy reflections. In Vray you need to use glossi reflections to get speculars too.

Use interpolations to speed it up or use a very low amount of subdivisions if you dont want to interpolate them.

But if you uncheck trace reflections you can also fake the speculars playing with the glossi amount and reflections amount too, and its behavior will be the same as max speculars.

    Hope this helps,

Use a Shellac Material, Vray Mat in one slot Blur Highlight Only in the other.
Shellac mats will suck the life out of Vray though, you will notice a big slowdown +10x if you use lot's of them. Like most deep level maps, blend type mapping, fresnel masks....
Please Multi-Layer Spec maps in Vray Material on top of raytraced glossiness!!! You just can't use glossy on everything in large scenes, it's a great way to simulate complex materials without the performance hit. Or at the very least make standard Mat work with Photon Mapping! More control, less generic materials, screw the real world, the real world doesn't have mutant space chimps or talking fish for that matter.
