    The hex tile material from: http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscrape.../maxplugs.html might be of some help (works with max5 too)

      The hex it the easy part

      The hex it the easy part its what its doing is..hard...
      Its action like a million ...kaleidoscopes.....
      And pulling it into ..like looks like Pixilated glossy material…
      That would take a year to ..render.

        Sounds like it is refracting too much, maybe try setting the ior to 1.0-1.1, In a quick test I made a material that was close with an ior of 1.05 I put the hex texture in both the diffuse and refraction slot (the refraction map was slightly darker than the diffuse map but still close to the actual material hues) You can adjust the opacity either by the output spinner to mix it with a black refraction color or darken the colors in the hex map. Also you can play with the fog color/strength a bit. If you are using glossies make sure to turn the subdivs as low as you can get away with usualy around 3 to 6.

          take a falloff map into the diffusechannel which changes the color with the viewangle...
