  • I need help. Realistic spotlight problem...

The problem is to make a rectangle spotlight (outdoor lighting) with volume light and it must be area light.

Vray doesn’t work with max volume light effect. (Maybe I just can’t make them work together?)
Max raytraced shadows did make shadow at all but I’ve got volume.
I tried to fake the volume light with box but the result is not good enough and it will be rendered for ages....

ScatterVL is the plugin you need. its free and it works great with vRay.

for some reason vRay doesn't play well with Max's default volume lights.

Actually standard Volume light works, and also it is bad, as well as Scatter VL. For the information: that has earned standard Volume light only it is necessary to choose one of variants Filter Shadow (low, med., high), instead of "use light smp range" (by default). But it all the same will not help, since normal Volume light all the same will be only at use "Shadow map". At use of any other shadows shadows in Volumetric light at once vanish. It is typical both for standard VL, and for Scatter VL.
