what is z-depth and g-buffer mean

z-depth is a grey scale channel or image used to indicate how far away stuff is in a rendering (black is farthest away, white is closest)
g-buffer is a general term to refer to z-depth and other similar additional channels of information that can be embedded in an image such as object velocity (how fast an object is moving in relationship to the camera) or material ID (what matID number is assigned to a face)
