  • glossy reflection problem.....

Ok I'm trying to do something that apparently should be simple but I'm having problems.....
I have a glossy reflective vmatl on that flowting wall but I want only the refection of the city scape picture to be refected (glossy reflection) in that grey piece and not the sky map in the back.....

I put the cityspcape map in the vray environment under "reflection/refraction environment, but nothing happens...I alos tried to put the city space map in the reflection channel of the vramatl applied to the grey piece but now that the cityscape shows up, it's colors are inverted/messed up!!!!

    1) this is the screen capture with the cityscape map in the vray environment under "reflection/refraction environment......nothing shows up in the grey reflective piece:

    2) this is the shot w/ the cityscape image in the refection channel of the grey reflective vray-mat:

    please help.

You need to use a spherical map if you want to use it in the environmental slot. Going with the second option you can try to invert the map, it should work but dont forget that will take the colors as an information about how it should reflect the surronding scene.

White means full reflective and black without reflection.

The only way to use it, if I understand right, is in the diffuse slot, and then use glossi reflections.

thanks goncalo for the quick reply:

I did some other quick tests with the first option: the cityscape map in the reflection envirnment slot of the render/refelct in the grey piece, but that reflection IS NOT affected by the glossiness of the reflection for the vraymat....only true reflected environment (like the green box underneath and the light are reflected and blurred...the image in the reflection environment slot for the render is not blurred....

that seems kinda strange....why shouldn't that be blured like the rest of the 3d environment?

hmmm......actually I just found out that if I check "use interpolation" in th e reflection area of the vraymat (under glossy reflections), IT BLURS also the reflected cityscape map the "reflect/refract environment" under the render!!!!......

that took a while to play with/figure out......

still haven't figured out the 2nd option though: why when i put a map in the reflection channel for a vraymat it INVERTS the colors for that reflected map......very strange....

as i understand it, putting the map in the reflection slot doesn't work the same way as it does in the max standard material. By using the image in the vray reflection slot, vray doesn't reflect the image, it uses the pixel values to map the amount of reflection. For instance, if you put a black and white checker pattern in the slot, the black areas would reflect nothing, and the white areas would reflect 100%. Apparently, it takes into account color information, too.

But, GoncaloP is right . .. i think your best bet is the first option. you just may need to play with the refl.\glossy settings..

            geenyus is right

The reflection slot controls the reflection amount, not the reflected image like in standard materials.

Also, the material is your screengrabs has no glossiness?
