  • help with gi settings

need a little advice. I've got an interior sceen, with one spot light, and 8 point lights. . .It's just not good. Too splotchy. I don't want to increase the intp samples as that'll be too blurry and soft.
See image and settings at http://joose.4t.com/photo.html

any help would be great. pardon the crappy website, it's a free hosting site I logged onto so I could post images on this forum.

refer to this guideline for any sploches types you may have - it's very helpful.

i'm no big expert, but isn't your secondary bounces depth a bit high? why not reducing it to about 5-7, and buy yourself some precious render time to increase the min and max rates at the first diffuse bounce? i would say perhaps around -3 to 1 for 1024X768 resulotion, so something like that?if the dark areas don't appear lighted enough (although your scene doesn't seem to lack light souces in such a severe way) you can always use color mapping.
      hope that helps...

try lowering the secondary bounces depth to around 10 or less and put its multiplier around 0.8 and the enviroment multiplier to around 5 or 4
alternatively you can use some a large vray light and lower even more the above settings
i also think you ll have much faster and better results if you use adaptive subdivision for youR
let us know how you do
        regards

          revised settings

thanks for the suggestions. I kept all the same settings last night, and cranked up the intp settings to -2 and 0. it's better, but not 3 times better, and not a good image considering that it took 14hrs to crank out the gi, and about 15 min. to render.

the environment multiplier set's the overall lighting, that tweek shouldn't effect the splotchiness, but i'll add a few lights to see if that helps. stay tuned. As always more feedback is always welcome.

I can't see if the splotches are GI or reflection problems. The pillars for example, are these supposed to be like that (some marble or something?) or are they just white and have splotches from the light? Also your ceiling looks weird. With that high settings it's impossible to have GI splotches imo. I think there are other problems here!

Could be material problems? Columns had a fresnal reflection. Celing has a tile bump map and a 20% diffuse map, and is imported geometry from Autocadd. I'm going to turn off the diffuse map, and change the column material to white with no reflections, or refractions. The exterior ground plane (outside) was gray. I'll change that to white. Look for a revised image tomorrow, and thanks for lookin'. Let me know if you think of anything else.

still not there, I think my color threshold and my normal threshold were too low. do i just need more lights?
