aargh my MAX 5.1 is unstable

I know this is off topic. But I'm getting frustrated and this list seems to be full of brilliant people full of fantastic advice there just maybe someone here that can help.

I've been using MAX 5.1 with Vray for around 4 months now (always the second to latest Vray build). I Love it. Vray does exactly what it is told and is very stable.

MAX on the other hand crashes on me very often - say 2-3 times per hour when editing. This occurs in multiple files and happens mainly when clicking between each viewport - which to me suggests it is something to do with the settings of my graphics card.

I'm using a Compaq evoN800w with 512Mb, XP pro (latest build). The graphics card is a Mobility Fire GL 9000 - 64Mb ram.

I assume I should be using openGL as the default graphics driver. What settings should I be tweaking to get the best out of MAX?

Am I missing something?

Try different versions of the catalyst driver from ATI to see if one of them fixes the issue. Older versions were unstable but the newer versions seem pretty good.

digging deeper into ATIs web site all mobile graphics card drivers are found on the laptop manufacturers site - ie compaq's.

compaq has a revised driver that I think will do the trick.

even though my laptop is only a few months old it appears that the default driver is around a year old!!
