  • To Be Or Not To

    Hi all

I downloaded free version, but not much luck, not even from Introduction to radiosity/global illumination with free version of the vray-plugin.

I beleive that Vray is good, and my unsuccess is because I am still new.

I do 3D visualisation of Architecture, and I would like to have much better renderings.

I am thinking of buying VRay Basic.

How much is difference between Basic and Advanced . I got some specs, wich I don't understand, so if somebody can explain in plain english what the difference are, and if Basic will be good enough for some day to day renderings.

Is there much difference between free and basic versions.
Are there some images done in Free, Basic, Advanced versions, so I can compare different features of all 3 versions.
    Anybody please help me decide!

    Regards Sergio!

I can't find info on the difference between the two. Can you tell me where you find this specs of vray basic?

      http://www.vrayrender.com/home/buyvray.html

i personally dont remember the specs, but its just some features arent in basic that are in advanced. the old website used to have more info.

the compare url doesnt work, so its not really clear what the diff is.

        Hi all!
        there are specs:

        VRay Basic package:
        · True raytraced reflections and refractions
        · Glossy reflections and refractions
        · Translucency (with volume fog) for creating wax, marble, smoked glass
        · Area shadows (soft shadows). Includes box and sphere emitters.
        · Indirect Illumination (global illumination, global lighting). Different approaches include direct computation (brute
        force), and irradiance maps.
        · Motion Blur. Includes Quasi-Monte Carlo sampling approach
        · Depth-Of-Field camera effect.
        · Anti-aliasing. Includes fixed, simple 2 level and adaptive approaches.
        · Caustics (Radiosity)
        · G-Buffer (RGBA, material/object ID, Z-buffer)

The Advanced Package includes all basic features plus:
        · G-buffer based antialiasing.
        · Reusable irradiance maps (save and load support). Incremental sampling for fly-through animations.
        · Motion blur with analytic sampling
        · True HDRI support. Includes *.hdr, *.rad image loader with proper texture coordinates handling for both cubic and angular
maps support. Map your images directly without distortions or cropping.
        · Built-in area lights for physically correct illumination
        · Built-in material for faster materials calculations
        · Distributed rendering for utilizing all of your studios computers.
        · Different camera types: fish-eye, spherical, cylindrical and cubic cameras
        · Internal analytical displacement maps.
        · Global photon maps
        · Instanced geometry rendering
        · Displacement maps based on Chaos Group's personal technology that does not create additional geometry, thus reducing
        memory usage.
        · Internal Virtual Frame buffer with internal color correction controls

        The VRay free version has:
        (*) Antialiasing
        (*) Depth of field
(*) GI (brute force and limited irradiance map)
        (*) VRayMap for reflections/refractions

        Regards Sergio!

I realize that almost everyone has downloaded music, movies, software, porn off of the internet that is copyrighted at some point or another- for whatever their reasons. I'm not passing judgement on people who do, but I think you should really censor those type of comments. If you have any empathy, then the very least you can do is delete your post. It's very disrespectful and outright offensive to the developers who have generously participated in this community. They have really worked hard to bring such a great product to you. You should purchase it if you can.

by the way that was not funny.

I would certainly go for advanced instead of basic. The vray material, reusable irradiance maps, area lights are very usefull, you will not have much control over your lighting without them. (or at least not enough imo if you want to do serious visualizations)

I originally purchased Basic and then upgraded so I am able to better control animation. I still think it so amazing that they give out a free version. Wish it were available when I was a full-time student.

                      Regards Sergio!
VRay free's refelctions using VRay map are true raytracing, no?

Irradiance maps seem to calculate, but calculate for each frame - they still seem to be faster than direct computation. There is no support to modify Iradiance map paramentrs AFAIK.

Last I checked glossy reflections were supported. Simple, 2-level, and adaptive AA also seem to be supported.

Caustics works in theory - haven't got great results out of it.

HDRI works at least on some level.

Motion blur is not supported, but max's image motion blur looks like it works as a render effect.

I have done a search of the forum, but can't find much info on VRay free vs. other licenses.

I am trying to get my boss into VRay Advanced, as we need a network solution, but he doesn't see the light . His theory is that we put vray free on each machine -

Some clarity on this might be helpful.

                      Thx for any info!

i noticed a few things on the advanced list that gave me question marks

The Advanced Package includes all basic features plus:

                        · G-buffer based antialiasing.

for some reason the g buffer doesnt come out antialiased
is this me...or isnt it working yet?

                        · Distributed rendering for utilizing all of your studios computers.

we have never successfully got this working...hanging computers..black frames...a nightmare

                        · Different camera types: fish-eye, spherical, cylindrical and cubic cameras

why doesnt the other camera types work with videoposts lens effects?

                        · Internal Virtual Frame buffer with internal color correction controls

this one doesnt work for me either... i thought it got switched off?

dont get me wrong..i love vray...but i think theres a few bugs that need to be fixed..or omitted from that list

                        Comment

I would recommend the advanced version.
Saving your irradiance map is the main important thing for me
for architectual rendering to render the correct collors for my
architecture without getting the problem of to much colorbleeding.

My first oppinion about Vray was. "Wow this is very Fast".
