  • Lighting up large spaces

    Hi,
I'm working on a project which involves a visualisation of an indoor football field. The interior is quite empty, so there's basically just a lot of walls and a big floor. That's why i think it's important with some nice light to make it look interesting. I've had no problems earlier with small rooms and exteriors, but i'm having problems here. Trying to light it as it would be in reality with a lot of area lights looks quite good, but the renderspeed suffers terribly. Non-area shadows doesn't look nice, lot's of sharp shadows flying around. Do you guys have any tips for a good setup? there's no light from the outside reaching in (no windows).

    thank you
    /Joakim

    hi
personally i would put vray lights in where the real lights would go.

instead of answers, a couple of questions:

1- Do you need area shadows? - If the space has lot of G.I. contributing, shadows will be nice and soft because of it, bouncing from all directions.

2- May be not all lights need to contribute to the G.I., you can sue some lights with very close range, to afect close surfaces and with a quick fall off may be with or without casting shadows (this would be scene and light by light dependant) and some lights to contribute to the G.I.

3 I've had nice experience (regarding rendering speed) using selfilluminated geometry with VRayMtlWrap cranking up Generate GI to generate GI and the real lights, attenuatted only for direct illumination, no GI. Of course it's a fake, but ti is a fast fake... fakiosity is still alive even with GI rendering engines!!!

Thank you guys for the tips, I'm trying out another approach now with 2 Laaarge area lights pointing in different directions and an omni to fake gi , it looks pretty good so far. Deadline is in a couple of hours... so i wont have time to try your techniques for this project , but i know for next time.

            thank you

If your technique gets the job done in time with the quality you want, then it is no doubt the best.

what ever works - is the best solution - especially at cruch time.....as we all know
